Europe has been one of the longest-established DevRel scenes outside the United States, with strong communities in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France, the Nordics, Spain, and Eastern Europe. Many of the field’s foundational conferences (DevRelCon London, FOSDEM, Devoxx Belgium, Write the Docs Prague) are European.
Major hubs
United Kingdom
- London is the largest single European hub for DevRel. Many global developer-product companies maintain substantial London-based DevRel teams (Stripe, Twilio, GitHub, AWS, MongoDB, Cloudflare, etc.).
- DevRelCon London is the original DevRel conference.
- Hoopy (Matthew Revell) is UK-based.
- Notable practitioners include many of the original DevRelCon speaker cohort, and post-2022 a renewed cohort of senior practitioners returning to in-person events.
Germany / DACH region
- Berlin and Munich are the primary developer hubs.
- KubeCon Europe rotates through German cities (Berlin, Munich) and other European capitals.
- Devoxx (Belgium) is the long-running flagship for the German-speaking developer community as well as Belgian / French / Dutch.
- JetBrains has substantial European presence (Munich for KotlinConf, broad German developer community).
- Notable companies headquartered or with major presence: SAP, Software AG, Deutsche Telekom, plus a substantial AI-engineering cohort (Aleph Alpha, etc.).
Netherlands
- Amsterdam is a major DevRel hub.
- React Summit, JSNation (GitNation events) are held in Amsterdam.
- Floor Drees (now at Aiven, Austria-based) is a long-running Netherlands-based practitioner.
- Adyen, Booking.com, Mollie are notable Dutch developer-product / payments companies.
France
- Paris is the third-largest European DevRel hub.
- Devoxx France runs annually.
- dotJS, dotGo, dotConferences (Sylvain Zimmer) are influential.
- OVHcloud, Scaleway are French cloud providers with DevRel presence.
- Algolia is French-founded.
- Mistral AI is French-headquartered.
Nordics (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland)
- JFokus (Sweden) is a long-running Java conference.
- GOTO Aarhus and GOTO Copenhagen anchor Denmark’s developer-conference scene.
- Nordic.js in Stockholm.
- NDC (Norwegian Developers Conference), despite the name, is broadly international.
- Annie Talvasto (Finland) is a notable CNCF / cloud-native practitioner.
- Strong open-source culture across the region.
Spain and Portugal
- Spring I/O in Barcelona is one of the largest Spring conferences globally.
- Codemotion (Spain / Italy / Berlin / multiple) runs broadly.
- Hadi Hariri (JetBrains, VP DevRel) is Spain-based.
- Growing AI and DevOps communities.
Eastern Europe (Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria)
- DevRelCon Prague anchored the region’s DevRel community.
- Devoxx Poland in Kraków.
- React Universe Conf in Wrocław, Poland.
- Substantial outsourced engineering presence across the region produces a large pool of senior engineers, many of whom move into DevRel roles at global companies.
Belgium
- Devoxx Belgium (originally JavaPolis, 2001+) in Antwerp is one of the largest European developer conferences.
- FOSDEM in Brussels is the largest free open-source conference in the world.
Ireland
- Dublin hosts substantial US-tech-company EMEA presence.
- Aaron Bassett is Ireland-connected.
- Tito (event-ticketing platform) is Irish.
Distinctive characteristics of European DevRel
- Stronger open-source culture than the US average. FOSDEM, KubeCon Europe, and many language-community conferences reflect this.
- Regulatory awareness. European DevRel teams must navigate GDPR and emerging AI regulation more directly than US peers.
- More languages. Operating across English plus often German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, etc.
- Smaller venture-capital ecosystem historically meant fewer European-headquartered developer-product companies, though this has been changing in 2020s (Vercel, Doppler founded by Europeans; major European fintech and infrastructure successes).
- Compensation lower than US at equivalent levels, with substantial variation by country.
Notable European-headquartered developer-product companies
- Stripe (Irish-American; major European presence).
- JetBrains (Czech / Russian / global).
- Aiven (Finnish).
- Mistral AI (French).
- Doppler (US/European founders).
- Algolia (French).
- Mollie, Adyen (Dutch).
- DeepL (German).
- Aleph Alpha (German).
- Hugging Face (French-American).
- Sentry (Vienna founders; San Francisco HQ).
- Cloudflare, GitHub, MongoDB, HashiCorp, Twilio all have substantial European hub operations.
